The Ancient Art of Silverpoint
With Leslie Lienau
Friday, November 6th / 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Course Description:
Discover one of art history’s oldest and most elegant drawing techniques in this immersive three-hour workshop led by artist Leslie. Before graphite pencils existed, artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Hans Holbein the Younger created extraordinary drawings using silver and other metals. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the fascinating history of metal point and experience this centuries-old medium for yourself.
The workshop begins with an engaging lecture and live demonstration exploring the origins of metal point, the different metals artists historically used, and the specially prepared drawing surfaces required for the process. Leslie will demonstrate how traditional gesso grounds are made and explain how these historic materials continue to inspire contemporary artists today.
During the second half of the workshop, participants will create their own silverpoint drawing while learning essential mark-making techniques and gaining firsthand experience with this unique medium. Silverpoint produces delicate, permanent lines that gradually develop a beautiful patina over time, making it a rewarding process for artists of all skill levels.
What you’ll Learn:
- The history and evolution of metal point drawing
- How artists prepared traditional drawing grounds
