Surrealism Oil Painting: For Beginners and Intermediate

Course Description:
This workshop is designed to provide participants with in-depth guidance in creating and developing a surrealist oil painting. Over four sessions, attendees will receive clear, step-by-step instruction and individualized support, culminating in a completed artwork.
The course begins with foundational drawing, then progresses into painting, layering, and glazing techniques. Participants will explore the use of symbolism and learn how to thoughtfully incorporate symbolic elements into their compositions. The workshop also includes instruction in color mixing and proper paint preparation.
Materials:
- Primed cotton canvas or panel (approximately 20×20 inches)
- Brushes suitable for oil painting in various sizes (a variety pack is recommended with detail brushes)
- Oil paints (any brand)
- Titanium White
- Raw Umber
- Ivory Black
- Payne’s Grey
- Alizarin Crimson
- Burnt Sienna
- Cadmium Red
- Cobalt or Ultramarine Blue
- Yellow Ochre
- Lemon Yellow
(Participants may bring additional colors if they wish)

Clothing:
Participants are advised to bring an apron to protect their clothing during the painting sessions.
About the Artist:
Stella J. Richey studied oil painting at Tibet University under the guidance of artists Gade and Tswang Tashi. She also trained in traditional Thangka Buddhist painting at the Danba Rao Dan Thangka Institute in Lhasa, Tibet.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in Italy, Spain, China, Egypt, and the United States. In addition to her artistic practice, Ms. Richey specializes in linguistics and works as an interpreter. She is fluent in Spanish and Mandarin and holds a certificate in Tibetan Studies.
Over the past twenty years, she has traveled extensively worldwide, conducting research in philosophy, mythology, symbolism, art, and medicine.
*This workshop is held in our downstairs classroom, which is not accessible to wheelchairs and some other mobility devices.
